With Honor
June 25, 2009 - 11:14am — bafadminHave you noticed that “Honor” has become a lost art lately? Why is it so difficult for people to show Honor to teachers, bosses and people in authority? I believe the answer lies in one word…Familiarity. It’s hard to honor something that is familiar. The life of Jesus was a clear example. When Jesus traveled around doing his miracles, he was new to every city he entered. So when he showed up, the people were astonished by the miracles he performed. But when Jesus got to his hometown of Nazareth, he was the same man who had done miracles, same teaching, but there was no honor. Why? The problem with honor is familiarity. The problem with honor is we’re too used to these people being around. Jesus had always been around the people of Nazareth. I mean how could they honor this guy as the Messiah when they remembered him as a little kid running around. How could they respect him as the Messiah when they saw him go through puberty? How could they honor him as the Messiah, when they remembered him as a kid sitting with them in Torah school…now, all of a sudden, he thinks he’s the Messiah? It was a familiarity issue. Familiarity breeds what? Contempt. Now, Contempt we’re used to. It’s easy to dishonor our teachers, police and military, because they have always been around. We have never known life without them. We can do better. Let’s get back to the art of honoring those around us.
